“There Will Come Soft Rains,” by author Ray Bradbury, is about a “smart” house that does normal chores for a family. However, after this California city is destroyed by a nuclear bomb the house is the only thing left standing. It is later destroyed by a fire caused by a windstorm. I believe the overall message or theme this story demonstrates is that man itself creates the monster that destroys us. What I mean by that is nuclear war is something that we have created and that it is ironic that it is the reason for our demise in this scenario. Also, the fact that the smart house is left, and the humans are gone is interesting because it shows that our technology advances have the ability to surpass man itself. Lastly, another theme I noticed is that nature always wins. In other words, no matter what we create nature has the power to destroy it. Overall, I enjoyed the story and was very surprised on how deep the message is. We create technology that can destroy us and nature has the power to destroy what we create.
